The Man Who Tried to Return a Toaster to a Shoe Store

A man walked into our shoe store carrying a toaster.

Not in a bag. Not in a box. Just a toaster, held under one arm like a small, disappointing pet.

“It’s stopped working,” he announced. “And I’d like a refund.”

I looked at the toaster. I looked at the wall of shoes behind me. I looked back at the toaster, in case it had become a shoe while I wasn’t watching.

“Sir,” I said, “we sell shoes.”

“That’s exactly what the electronics store told me about these,” he said, pointing at his feet. “Very unhelpful attitude over there too.”

He produced a receipt. It was four years old, from a city I have never visited, for a toaster purchased at a store whose name shared exactly one thing with ours: it also started with the letter S.

By this point, a small audience had formed. A woman trying on sandals had stopped pretending not to listen. Our manager, Dave, arrived with the calm expression of a man who has returned things that were never bought anywhere.

Dave did not argue. He simply took the toaster, plugged it into the socket behind the counter, and pressed the lever down.

We all waited.

Pop. Perfect toast.

The man stared at it for a long time.

Then, very quietly, he said: “It’s been unplugged since Tuesday. I told my wife it was broken so she’d start making pancakes again.”

He took his perfectly working toaster and left.

The woman in the sandals bought nothing, but she told Dave it was the best entertainment she’d had all month.
